There are times in this industry when you come across a project that’s a genuine joy. That was what we encountered when contacted by a customer in Vyner Road South, Prenton. We’ve done plenty of conversions in our time – lofts, attics, and basements mostly – but we didn’t expect this.
As you’ll see from the pictures, what the client had us working with was an old brick-built stables. Before our design team even put pen to paper, we were excited by the possibilities. The was plenty of space to work with, in terms of head height as well as floorspace. The first thing our client wanted from this exercise was to join the stables directly to the property. In simple terms, this meant knocking down the existing wall that divided the two of them. Since it was originally a supporting wall for the house, we needed to do this in stages, ensuring it was properly braced throughout.
The stable was one large building, built as a single floor with a very high ceiling. Our client wanted a kitchen / utility room downstairs, and a bedroom with en suite bathroom upstairs. It’s a common request for an extension, but we normally have the advantage of building a floor at a time. With the overall structure already in place we had to use scaffolding and support frame to install new joists.
Putting in a floor is not easy, but we ended up with something that was solid and sturdy, as well as looking great. When we are renovating an existing building or extension, we want to use as much of the old material as possible. Brick and stone tend to last an awful long time – it’s why we use them for building in the first place. While mortar and plaster might end up being disposed or replaced, no keep the original bricks wherever we can.
Do you have an existing outbuilding already attached to your property? Perhaps it’s a disused stable, an old, brick-built shed, or even a separate garage. If you’re not getting the maximum use out of it as it stands, then a conversion or an extension might be the key.
