One-storey rear kitchen extension in Liverpool

This rear kitchen extension on Alerton Drive in Liverpool was a lot of fun for us. From the outside, it seems quite a simple job – a rectangular extension, straight out of the back wall. It even has a flat roof: how much more run-of-the-mill can you get. Of course, if you flick through the photos opposite, you’ll see there was more to it than that… much more.

A light in the darkness

This large extension was intended to be a new kitchen with an in-built utility room. That’s a common request with house extensions, meaning more room for culinary gadgets and the like. However, a key component for the brief was that the room get as much natural light as possible. We tried a couple of tricks with our initial designs but, with the size and shape of the extension, nothing really worked. Then it hit us – skylights. We already had in mind to utilise a large patio door in the rear wall. This is an old favourite of ours and one very popular with clients across the north west. The addition of skylights allowed us to play with the lighting effects inside and offer more daylight.

First things first

As ever, we laid our foundations, including plumbing, wiring, and drainage systems for both kitchen and utility room. The external wall went up next, followed by the flat roof. So far, so easy – now for the fun part.

Keeping them in suspense

With the patio door in place, the skylights we next. Though they are effective light catchers, skylights often fail to look attractive. We wanted the benefits of all that natural light, but a more tempered, modern aesthetic. The solution was a suspended ceiling beneath the skylights. They still allowed for the influx of natural light, but mean you’re not looking up at an open sky. It also allows electric lights to be incorporated into the ceiling ready for when you need them.

A job well done

An unusual case in that the interior layout took far longer than erecting the whole of the external wall. That said, it still only took 12 weeks to complete and we’re sure you’ll agree that the finished result is spectacular.
